Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shawan, Maryland. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing requirements.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has grown remarkably over recent years. A multitude of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. This choice is prevalent among employers enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, judicial systems, and probation officers overseeing individuals. Hair drug tests are advantageous due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days and the difficulty in tampering with the sample, although urine tests remain most effective for use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair itself preserves a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within its expanding fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for these substances. The hair collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hairs (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, extra assessments, and/or examinations over 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning stage, a sample is initially incorporated into a lab's system. This phase entails verifying the sample's secure sealing and proper shipment, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data that isn't issued by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient method to rule out substance use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening will require further confirmation.

If a sample is suspected to be positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome are washed if necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter detection span.
  • Tough to deceive: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thus rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually carry a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
