Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Union Bridge, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with centers across the nation capable of performing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from any part of the head or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs or alcohol/ETG and offer customizable testing options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine testing. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary programs often rely on hair tests. The main advantage is a detection period reaching up to 90 days, nearly impossible to tamper with, although a urine test remains accurate for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-standing record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an up to 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We propose using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair might be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. This includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary quick check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples screened as presumptively positive need secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening step, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a lower concentration than in other methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), accounting for why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter time span.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is notably hard to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outmatch urine testing in Union Bridge, MD? The answer lies within its unparalleled accuracy in detecting substances. Hair tests offer more detailed results compared to traditional urine tests.

Hair follicle testing provides a superior detecting tool by identifying traces of drugs previously undiscovered by urine tests. This reliability gives it preference amongst employers and authorities enforcing strict drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

One striking advantage of hair follicle testing in Union Bridge, MD is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, it assesses drug use over an impressive duration of up to 90 days.

This comprehensive assessment gives employers insight into their employees' or applicants' substance habits, providing more than a glimpse of their drug history, enabling informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
