Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Berkley, Massachusetts. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, we excel in hair analysis and have facilities across all cities in the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, hair on the top of your head should be 1.5 to 2 inches long, though body hair can be used if necessary. We offer assessments for drugs, alcohol, ETG, or other specified tests.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for assessing drug use. This test is increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors as opposed to conventional urine tests. It's favored by those with zero-tolerance policies as it effectively screens individuals up to 90 days prior, while also being hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent consumption within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair holds a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drugs, capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as they grow. When taken near to the scalp, the sample can offer a drug and alcohol detection window up to roughly three months. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment entailing roughly 200 hair strands (nearly the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or when exceeding 10 panel tests, 150mg of sample is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair strictly. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process comprises four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a specimen into the lab’s system. It ensures the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening delivers a speedy preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While it offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive outcome demands confirmation to be legally defensible. Any specimens showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample reflects a presumptively positive result at the Screening step, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and processed for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations relative to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most complex methodology.

Positive screening confirmations are executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned prior to confirmation where needed. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair protocol along with ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which provide a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves notably challenging, thus ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Supply of historical insights: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs need 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs a higher cost than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color or unique hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis occurs on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
