Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Bolton, Massachusetts. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in follicle testing and operates centers across all U.S. cities capable of performing these tests. Typically, around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is needed. Hair analyses can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methodologies have increasingly favored hair follicle analyses. Many employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts mandate this over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle tests are utilized by companies with strict no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and probationary individuals. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection window, reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation, and hard to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair provides an extended history of alcohol and drug presence. When sampling near the scalp, hair analysis offers an approximately 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipment.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a pencil), close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more extensive panel tests beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is favored. Using a jeweler's scale for accurate weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses various types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in a laboratory's processing of drug test samples: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the process begins with integrating a sample into the lab’s framework. This process ensures the sample's seal and shipment were correctly handled, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any data input that an electronic chain of custody system did not supply.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for determining drug consumption in most samples, any positive findings necessitate confirmation to be recognized in court. Samples with a preliminary positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

When Screening indicates a possible positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drug substances are extracted from the hair in much lower concentrations than those found with alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug analysis as a challenging approach to execute.

Any confirmed positive outcomes from Screening are further verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive results undergo necessary washing before Confirmation. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is meticulously evaluated, adhering to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug consumption over 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, offering highly reliable results.
  • Long-term usage information: It can reveal prolonged drug use trends over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs typically require 5-7 days post-consumption to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and personal growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
