Accredited Drug Testing provides a comprehensive service for hair follicle drug screenings in Charlton, Massachusetts. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, with facilities spread across cities nationwide to accommodate your needs. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or body. Hair tests can analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become part of drug screening processes. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle screenings are ideal for employers with a strict no-drug policy, court-mandated tests, and for checking individuals on probation. The primary advantage is the test's extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days. Additionally, the tests are observed, minimizing chances for deception. For recent drug use (within the last 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair presents an extended record of alcohol and substances by holding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and uncomplicated to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, creating the perfect sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be taken. Reference to head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially incorporating a sample into the lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary fast assessment for substance abuse. While Screening remains a budget-friendly means to discount drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be validated to be legally acceptable. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening do necessitate an additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. Here, substances are withdrawn from hair at a reduced concentration in comparison to other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening poses a significant challenge in execution.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use for as much as 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a briefer detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Conveys temporal data: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, going beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally are pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair dye and individual variances in hair expansion impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While typically labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
