In Cochituate, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers span all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often request hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies favor hair tests for their extensive detection period, up to 90 days, and near impossibility to falsify. However, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives drug and alcohol history by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs for a period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp provides 100mg of sample, which is the optimum amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to measure the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" pertains to scalp hair only, while "body hair" denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary phases are integral to the laboratory workflow of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entries absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary, economical assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently eliminates the majority of negative samples, legal admissibility demands subsequent confirmation of positive results. Samples concerning presumptive positivity in the Screening stage must undergo further validation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at markedly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating the complexity of hair drug testing compared to other methodologies.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are laundered before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory course from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated in light of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Compared to urine tests, hair drug tests can identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical pattern analysis: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to appear recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become discernible in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair testing over traditional urine tests in Cochituate, MA? The benefits are significant. Hair tests boast superior detection accuracy, capturing substance use over a much longer period than urine tests, which are generally limited to a few days.

Compared to urine tests, hair testing provides higher reliability. With an extended detection window and less susceptibility to masking, hair samples furnish employers with a clear assessment of substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a game-changer in Cochituate, MA. Spanning up to 90 days, this testing method offers a comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance use, helping employers make informed decisions.

By verifying drug use over several months, hair testing grants employers a broad perspective, unrivaled by other methods, ensuring thorough applicant screening and employee evaluations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In the realm of drug testing, minimizing sample tampering is paramount. Hair follicle testing in Cochituate, MA, stands out by offering a tamper-resistant method. Its nature makes altering results nearly impossible, ensuring authenticity.

Unlike other methods, hair tests provide unquestionable results. The integrity of the sample is preserved, reducing risks of attempted adulteration and delivering trustworthy information to employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
