At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fayville, Massachusetts. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, we have Nationwide accredited centers capable of performing hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is needed, otherwise, body hair may be used. Our hair tests are versatile, assessing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence over traditional methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists increasingly rely on hair tests instead of urine samples. Hair tests support zero-tolerance policies, and are favored by courts and probation officers. These tests offer an extended detection window, up to 90 days, making them hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain paradigmatic.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly being recognized as a significant means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. Hair uniquely offers a protracted history of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can exhibit roughly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece comprising approximately 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirming. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest assessing the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair might be collected. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial handling of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step covers verifying the sample’s sealed and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening functions as an initial quick examination for substance misuse. Even though Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This segment involves capturing drugs from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are washed ahead of confirmation as needed. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the standards of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can determine drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s notably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recognizing recent use: It necessitates approximately 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to be traceable within hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
