Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Forestdale, Massachusetts. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair analysis, with facilities in cities nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This testing method is favored by employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, the legal system, and probationary programs. The main advantage is its longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with collection being highly monitored and nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Seen as a formidable instrument for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing provides an extensive record by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of a burgeoning hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a financially efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screening necessitates subsequent confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a reduced detection window.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It highlights a timeline of drug use beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to identify recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variation in outcomes: Variables like hair pigment and individual hair growth disparities can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the testing process analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outranks Urine Testing in Forestdale, MA: Hair testing provides superior accuracy and reliability when compared to traditional urine tests.

  • Hair samples can detect past drug use up to 90 days, offering a more comprehensive insight.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
