Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Holliston, Massachusetts. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our facilities specialize in such testing and are available nationwide. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of either head or body hair. Options include tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug testing. Many companies, legal bodies, and substance abuse professionals prefer the hair test over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict drug policies, as well as courts and those on probation, often choose this test. A key advantage is the longer detection window, up to 90 days, which is observed during collection and hard to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair allows for a long-term record of alcohol and drugs. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and other drugs. It is easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. If scalp hair is missing, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key phases in processing drug test results in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. Tasks include ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and managing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples testing positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers trend data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
