In Leicester, Massachusetts, the Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, offering centers in every city nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is needed. Hair tests are effective for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Lately, drug testing methods increasingly use hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and professionals dealing with substance abuse often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored for zero-tolerance policies by employers, courts, and probation individuals. Their advantage lies in a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with results collected during an observed process, making tampering nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests still provide the most accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing serves as an effective mechanism for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair encases long-term biochemical indicators of alcohol and drug use within its fibers during growth. When samples are taken close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol use over approximately a three-month period. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample section of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—a perfect quantity for initial screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional screenings, or when exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to use 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. In situations where scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. All other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This phase ensures the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves completion of any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes a quick preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use in most cases, any positive result needs secondary verification to be used legally. Samples with preliminary positive results during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a preliminary positive result emerges during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction step. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methods to perform.

Positive results from screenings are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo requisite washing. The processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use history over 90 days, contrasted with the shorter detection span of urine assessments.
  • High resistance to deception: The difficulty in manipulating hair drug tests enhances result reliability.
  • Retrospective data provision: These tests offer a reporting record of drug use, indicating usage trends over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be identifiable within hair.
  • Expense: Comparatively, hair drug assessments are pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variation may influence metabolite concentration in samples.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
