Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Lynnfield, Massachusetts. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist, featuring facilities across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown or other body areas. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other personalized hair analysis options.

Through recent advances, hair follicle drug testing has become a more favored method for detecting drug presence. Numerous employers, judicial authorities, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair drug testing over the standard urine method. Hair follicle tests are popular with organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those overseeing probation. Their primary advantage is detecting drug use over extended periods, typically up to 90 days, using an observed collection process that's challenging to compromise. Still, for detecting substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver up to approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, enhanced tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable weight of body hair may be harvested. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step involves checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for the presence of drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive outcome must be verified for acceptability in court. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening require a secondary verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original specimen and set up for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a remarkably lower concentration than seen in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is one of the trickiest methodologies to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned before confirmation if needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation conforming to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analyses can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a more abbreviated detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It can deliver a sustained pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • More expensive: Hair drug tests typically incur a higher cost than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
