Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair-based evaluations. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, our centers nationwide, including Rehoboth, MA, are equipped to conduct hair exams. Hair length should be from 1.5 to 2 inches either from the scalp or the body. Detect substances and alcohol/ETG, plus other specialized hair evaluations.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has surged in use over conventional methods for detecting drugs. Employers, judicial entities, and professionals in Substance Abuse increasingly require hair tests over urine analysis. Ideal for those enforcing zero-tolerance, its primary advantage lies in its extended 90-day detection span, collected under observation, rendering it nearly foolproof. Yet, for assessing very recent usage, within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within its developing strands. When harvested near the scalp, hair samples can potentially reveal a detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Reference to head hair implies only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process within the lab involves four major phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the sample's initial entry into a lab's system. This process ensures the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening economically rules out drug usage in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial acceptability. Any samples showing a presumptive positive result during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Upon receiving a presumptive positive result in the Screening stage, further hair samples are drawn from the original collection for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are derived from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other testing forms (like urine or saliva), which accounts for hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed according to requirements. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test proves challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Illustrates historical usage: It illustrates drug consumption patterns over time, not merely current use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination is performed on the hair strand, excluding the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
