Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate testing centers Nationwide. A sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown or body. These tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Numerous employers, legal authorities, and addiction specialists now opt for hair testing over urine tests. Hair tests serve zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation officers. Their key advantage is detecting drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, via an observed process. However, for recent usage detection within 5 days, urine tests still hold accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the lengthening hair shaft. When cut near the scalp, hair may offer a detection period for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

An inch and a half of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and validation. For tests involving EtG, additional components, or over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab analysis of a drug test result involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first-phase handling of a specimen within a lab’s framework. This process includes ensuring the sample remains sealed and properly dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical method to verify drug use for most samples, court-acceptable results require confirmation of a positive screen. Any samples that are presumptive for drugs in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially reduced concentrations relative to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

All positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. From beginning to end, the entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection intervals.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical usage: It offers a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, unlike recent usage tests.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Swampscott, MA, hair follicle testing surpasses urine tests in several ways. While urine tests detect recent usage, hair tests reveal drug use over up to 90 days, offering a broader detection window. Hair testing is less invasive, negates the chances of alterations, and ensures reliability. It is particularly favored for its comprehensive approach that urine tests cannot match.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing provides a superior detection window, extending up to 90 days, as conducted in Swampscott, MA. This extended period allows employers to get a thorough understanding of an individual's substance usage history. Knowing how long the detection window is empowers organizations to make informed choices regarding staffing and operations.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Swampscott, MA, hair follicle tests offer a nearly tamper-proof method of drug testing. Unlike urine tests, which can sometimes be manipulated, hair tests offer little opportunity for adulteration. This characteristic makes them incredibly reliable and ensures that results obtained are trustworthy and valid, vastly reducing the opportunity for incorrect results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
