Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Tolland, Massachusetts. If you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, and we have nationwide testing centers, including those for a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair is an option when necessary. Hair testing can check for a variety of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing choices.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, making it almost foolproof. For detecting recent drug intake within the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronic record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If taken close to the scalp, hair offers up to about a 90-day detection period for alcohol and substances. Hair samples are easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch hair segment containing about 200 strands, equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil, near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of initially integrating a sample into the lab’s system, confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty to deceive: Hair drug tests are very challenging to cheat, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over time, not simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited detection of recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests are generally more costly than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tolland, MA, hair follicle testing offers advantages over more traditional urine tests. It provides a longer detection period, giving employers a deeper insight into an individual's history of substance use. Reliability is a hallmark of hair testing, with results that minimize chances of tampering and false reads.

Employers requiring thorough assessments benefit significantly from hair tests. These tests detect substances used up to 90 days past, offering a comprehensive overview compared to urine tests, which typically have a shorter detection window.

Extended Detection Window

One major benefit of hair follicle testing in Tolland, MA, is its extended detection window, capable of uncovering drug use up to 90 days prior. This allows employers to make informed decisions based on an applicant's or employee's long-term substance habits.

By using hair tests, companies gain an expansive view of an individual’s drug use history, which is crucial in assessing both current and past behaviors. This extended window is pivotal in occupations where safety and adherence to drug-free policies are critical.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Tolland, MA, offers a tamper-resistant solution, significantly reducing the possibility of sample adulteration. The nature of hair testing ensures results that are trustworthy and nearly impossible to manipulate.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
