Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Winchendon, MA. When a hair or alcohol test is needed, our specialty lies in hair testing, and we have centers in every city across the nation capable of executing such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Our hair analyses can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent times, the approach for drug testing has shifted towards the hair follicle drug test. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over conventional urine tests to uphold zero-tolerance policies. This method offers a broader detection timeframe of drug usage, up to 90 days, through a monitored collection, making it nearly unbeatable. However, for substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers into the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. It's straightforward to obtain, relatively tough to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil’s thickness) taken nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels beyond ten, or specific add-ons, a 150mg specimen can be advantageous. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not attainable, the same quantity of body hair is acceptable. When we mention head hair, it signifies scalp hair. Body hair includes any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result mainly involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system. It consists of confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any needed data entry that's not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid check for drugs of interest. While cost-effective for negating drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be substantiated to hold up in a legal context. Thus, any presumptively positive Screening outcomes necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations when compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis notably complex.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques facilitate the Confirmation of positive screenings. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive samples undergo washing as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows historical patterns: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, beyond just recent habits.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs are detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing strategies.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Winchendon, MA
When contrasting hair tests with traditional urine tests, hair testing stands out due to its longer detection window, catching substance use over the past 90 days. This offers landlords, employers, and authorities a comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history, which short-term urine tests may miss.

The meticulous nature of hair testing ensures higher detection accuracy than urine tests. This reliability is vital for organizations seeking to maintain a drug-free environment by having continuous awareness of potential substance abuse.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Winchendon, MA
Hair follicle testing provides an extended detection window for drug use, reaching up to 90 days. By examining hair samples, it expresses a complete view of historical substance consumption, valuable for employers assessing long-term patterns rather than recent usage alone.

This long-term overview assists in making informed decisions during the hiring or retention process. Appreciating the full context of an individual's behavior is crucial in crafting a safe and compliant workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
