Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harper Woods, Michigan. Our expertise lies in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, and our network of testing centers spans every city Nationwide. To conduct a hair test, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity over standard urine tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests. These tests stand out for employers with zero-tolerance policies, court cases, and probationers. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, often reaching 90 days, collected under observation, and very hard to cheat. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now viewed as an effective medium for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair samples can offer detection for substances and alcohol over a span of up to 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to compromise, and simple to send.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) taken closest to the scalp provides 100mg, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra features, and tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, a comparable sample of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifies scalp hair strictly. "Body hair" refers to any other type (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial integration of a sample into the lab system. This step verifies the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any missing data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drug substances. While it serves as an economical means to exclude substance presence in most samples, any positive Screening must be verified for courtroom validity. Samples that indicate presumptive positivity in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original source and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from the hair in much lower concentrations than found in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair screening the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to the necessary confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and conforming to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing identifies drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical context: It supplies a usage pattern over a period, not only recent drug use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically costlier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Harper Woods, MI, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a more comprehensive detection window, identifying substance use over a significantly longer duration. This advantage ensures that employers receive a clear understanding of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

In Harper Woods, MI, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a game-changer. This method can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a thorough view of someone's substance history. Employers gain an invaluable tool: the ability to see beyond recent use, capturing a more extended period that reveals consistent patterns or occasional misuse, providing a clearer insight into an individual's lifestyle choices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Harper Woods, MI, residents benefit from the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
