Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening solutions in Rosebush, Michigan, ideal for those who require drug or alcohol hair tests. Our expertise in hair testing is supported by our nationwide centers, equipped to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Our tests can detect substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG, and we offer various customized hair testing services.

More organizations are opting for hair follicle testing over the traditional urine method in recent times. This includes employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists favoring hair testing due to its longer detection window. Utilized by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary bodies, and those on probation, hair tests offer a longer detection period of about 90 days, gathered through an observed process, and are almost impossible to falsify. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective technique for detecting drug and alcohol usage. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month history of alcohol and drugs. The method of hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, the ideal specimen size is 150mg. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing methodology for drug test results comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary handling of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample is appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any further data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a swift initial check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude most samples from drug use, any positive screen must be verified before being considered admissible in a legal setting. Samples with a presumptive positive result require a dual confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are reduced from the hair at significantly lesser concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result happens via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can spot drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Archives historical data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations may influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is done on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing in Rosebush, MI are evident. Hair testing provides a superior detection rate and reliability, offering a comprehensive overview of substance use for up to 90 days. In contrast, urine tests cover only a short period, leaving gaps in detecting long-term consumption patterns.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Rosebush, MI enable a prolonged detection window, revealing drug use up to 90 days prior. This extended period allows employers to scrutinize substance histories more thoroughly, offering a detailed perspective on an individual's habits, decisiively supporting the evaluation process for employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
