Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair analysis and operates testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, which can be taken from the head or body. Our hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a popular method for drug testing in recent times. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, making it almost foolproof. However, for the most recent 5 days of drug use, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair provides about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It’s easy to collect, somewhat hard to adulterate, and straightforward to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar amount of body hair is an alternative. When we mention head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admission. Any sample showing a presumptive positive result in Screening requires an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days versus urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus making the results more trustworthy.
  • Delivers historical information: It reveals a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
