Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Carlos, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing are experts in hair examinations, with testing locations in every city across the Nation that can conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body suffices. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or other tailored hair test options.

Lately, the approach to drug evaluations has increasingly involved hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are now favoring hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are frequently used by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The major advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its longer detection period, usually up to 90 days, and it is conducted under supervised conditions, making it nearly foolproof. However, for discerning drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can indicate consumption of alcohol and other drugs for up to about a 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four core steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not imparted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally accepted in court. Presumptively positive samples during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in alternative approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests that have a limited window.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is highly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can outline a drug use pattern over an interval, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
