Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Ericsburg, Minnesota. Focusing on hair analyses for drugs or alcohol, our centers span every Nationwide city. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is typically needed. Hair testing options cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence, frequently replacing traditional urine tests in drug screening processes. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals increasingly favor hair testing. With a zero-tolerance approach, it offers an extended detection window, generally up to 90 days. This test is conducted under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. For drugs administered within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair records a long-term drug history by capturing biomarkers within its fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can reflect drug use over a span of nearly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's hard to tamper with, and easy to send off.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands (roughly a #2 pencil width) near the scalp will yield 100 mg—ideal for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150 mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four key steps in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample’s initial intake into the lab system. This includes ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, setting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not included in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drugs. While it is a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation for court validity. Samples with a tentative positive screening result need further verification.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Compared to urine tests, hair tests can detect drugs for nearly 90 days.
  • Hard to deceive: It's very challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring results are more precise.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Unlike capturing only recent usage, it shows drug use trends over time.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't catch immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
