Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Finlayson, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are used. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored examinations.

Lately, the hair follicle drug test method has become more common in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the courts, and probation systems for their longer detection period—up to 90 days—acquired through a supervised process, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting very recent drug use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from the scalp, containing approximately 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil), yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure is comprised of four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system, which entails checking the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most cases, any positive screening must be corroborated for legal acceptability. Presumptive positive samples from Screening necessitate further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is a complex methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed to confirm any positive screening results. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: They can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
