Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Green Valley, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing, with centers available in all cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head, though body hair might be used in many cases. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. This shift is seen among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals demanding hair drug tests over the standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation prefer hair follicle tests. The key advantage of this method is the significantly extended detection window for drug use—up to 90 days—along with being collected under direct observation, making it nearly indestructible to fraud. Still, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate the presence of substances over a span of about three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately #2 pencil thickness) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG add-ons or panels exceeding ten, 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be sourced. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially logged into the laboratory’s system. This phase confirms that the sample was sealed properly and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry that isn’t included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. This step is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, but any positive findings must be corroborated for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the sample is prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from the hair at lower concentrations than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to manipulation: A hair drug test is hard to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It provides an overview of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being often termed "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The Benefts of Hair Testing Over Urine Tests in Green Valley, MN

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
