Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Highland, Minnesota. For those needing hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and with facilities available in every city across the nation, a hair test is easily accessible. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally required, either from the scalp or body. Options include tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now commonly choose hair drug tests over traditional urine testing. It is preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems overseeing probation compliance, and more. Its key advantage is a lengthier window of detection, typically up to 90 days, ensuring a more reliable and tamper-proof procedure. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. If collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection time frame of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch cut of about 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or testing above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that was not accomplished by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening entails an initial brisk assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the conformity to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, which is longer compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is notably hard to manipulate a hair drug test, increasing the reliability of the results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug examination methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Highland, MN, the advantages are clear. Hair tests provide superior accuracy and reliability, becoming a cornerstone in drug testing due to their extensive detection period.

Employers benefit from hair testing's comprehensive detection capabilities, presenting a more accurate measure of substance use history. Traditional tests, while useful, cannot match the long-term insight hair testing offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
