Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions throughout Holmes City, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for alternate testing needs.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. A growing number of employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse programs now favor hair drug screening over standard urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation services utilize hair follicle assessments due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days. Although urine tests remain most effective for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we refer to head hair, it's specifically scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening is a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in the majority of cases, a positive screen needs confirmation for it to be viable in legal proceedings. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Even though these are often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
