Based in Orono, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle testing for drugs. Whether you need hair detection for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this testing method, with centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing the test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body suffices. Hair tests can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug detection in recent years. A variety of organizations, from employers to courts and Substance Abuse professionals, now prefer this method over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely heavily on hair follicle tests for their accuracy. The main advantage is its expansive detection window, reaching up to 90 days, collected in an observed manner, and virtually impossible to falsify. Still, the urine test remains the most precise for detecting very recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have increasingly become an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to manipulate, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for preliminary and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional information missing from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a Screening indicates a positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the hardest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All tentative positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, while urine tests offer a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to alter: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which increases result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
