In Saint Charles, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers throughout the Nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is required. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing over traditional methods has grown recently. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often select hair testing instead of the usual urine test. Hair follicle tests benefit workplaces with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection ability, spanning up to 90 days, and being highly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is effortless to gather, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advocated. We advise utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen. If hair from the scalp is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be collected. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This process verifies correct sealing and shipping of the specimen, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and involves completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to rule out drug usage in most specimens, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are drawn out from hair at a much smaller concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug assessment is the most complex methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive results in screening is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter interval of detection.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in higher accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
