Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Saint Joseph, Minnesota. Our specialty is hair testing for drugs or alcohol, with testing facilities in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is required. These tests can analyze a wide range of substances including drugs and alcohol (ETG), along with custom testing capabilities.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for substance abuse screening in recent years. Employers, courts, and professionals in Substance Abuse increasingly favor hair tests over urine tests. This is mainly due to the extended period they can detect drug use—up to 90 days—offering a longer window and are virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become a recognized tool for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair encapsulates long-term evidence of alcohol and drug presence by securing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can present up to about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, moderately hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch hair specimen consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. We suggest determining the specimen weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a matching quantity of body hair can be taken. When head hair is mentioned, it pertains to scalp hair solely. Body hair covers all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is introduced into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary review for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Any samples that test positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate positive in Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably complex.

Verification of any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests may identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result inconsistencies: Factors such as hair shade and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the testing examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saint Joseph, MN, hair follicle testing stands out as a superior method over traditional urine tests for several reasons. Key benefits of hair testing include its ability to provide more accurate and reliable results over an extended window of detection. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
