Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Twin Lakes, Minnesota. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing spans all cities nationwide, where our centers are equipped to perform hair analyses. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is needed for testing. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to your specific requirements.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug testing method has gained popularity for its extensive application. This form of drug testing is increasingly mandated by employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary monitoring services favor hair follicle tests. The key advantage of these tests lies in their ability to detect substance use over a much longer time frame, generally capturing up to 90 days of usage history, with an observed collection process that is extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug use, the urine test remains the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent instrument for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. The historical use of alcohol and other substances can be traced through hair, as it captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected from near the scalp, it offers an approximate detection period of 3 months for substances like alcohol. The collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (approximating a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis. For comprehensive tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is preferable. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. By 'head hair', we mean scalp hair specifically, while 'body hair' pertains to all other forms (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a drug test result at a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial process of entering a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any additional data not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary, rapid assessment for drug substances. While it economically eliminates the possibility of drug use for most samples, any positive result must be confirmed for legal validity. Presumptive positives during Screening necessitate confirmation.

Presumptive positive samples trigger the extraction of more hair from the initial sample for Extraction, where drugs are sourced from hair at even lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or saliva), making it a complicated procedure.

Confirmation of positive screening results uses techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The whole laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over a span of up to 90 days.
  • Cheating is challenging: The complexity of cheating enhances the accuracy of hair drug tests.
  • Chronological data: It delivers insights into the pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur greater costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
