Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Victoria, Minnesota. For those in need of drug or alcohol hair testing, we're experts in this area, operating centers across all major cities Nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically necessary. Our tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various customized hair test options.

In recent periods, the inclusion of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair tests over urine tests. These tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation individuals. Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days and are collected under observation, minimizing chances of tampering. For identifying recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent method, hair testing is used to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands retain biomarkers within their fibers throughout growth, delivering an extended-term snapshot of alcohol and drug history. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for up to roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of nearly 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra panels, or over ten-panel tests, 150mg of the hair sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a precision jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair are specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair refers to all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Steps in the Process

Drug test analysis in the lab includes four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary phase where a sample is entered into the lab’s system. This stage involves checking the sealing and proper shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While economical, Screening chiefly excludes drug use, yet a positive result necessitates confirmation to be applicable in legal situations. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further verification.

With a sample identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial batch is prepped for Extraction. Unlike other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hair drug tests recover drugs at a far lower concentration, making them the most arduous to execute.

Positives from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests’ shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite hard, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Chronological data: These tests reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
