Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Waite Park, Minnesota. Our specialty is hair drug and alcohol testing, with centers spread across cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug detection. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies and are used by courts and probation officers. These tests offer a longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, and are collected under observation, making them highly tamper-resistant. For detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests still provide the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected from near the scalp, it can reveal substance use for up to a three-month period. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, it is advised to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it pertains to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing into the lab's system. This process includes checking sample sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drug abuse detection. Although Screening is an economical method to discard drug use in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples indicating a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the collected sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower levels than in alternative testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to perform.

Confirmation of any positive results in screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All preliminary positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating is difficult: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug use over months, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incognito to recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur a higher cost than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Waite Park, MN, hair follicle testing beats urine testing with its superior ability to detect drug use over an extended time. While urine tests focus on recent use, hair tests offer a broader window of detection, ensuring more accurate results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
