Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Arnold Line, Mississippi. Whether requiring a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our centers nationwide are equipped for hair testing. Typically, you need 1.5-2 inches of head or body hair. Such tests can reveal substances like drugs or alcohol/ETG, with options for personalized hair test analysis.

Recently, drug testing approaches often include hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These hair tests are favored for policies enforcing zero-tolerance to drug use, courts, and probationers. Their primary advantage is the extended detection window, with monitoring up to 90 days, collected securely, making cheating nearly impossible. For detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still offer accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection time frame for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, fraud attempts are more challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece comprised of about 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, addons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal amount of body hair can be used. In the context of head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically, whereas body hair encompasses other types (face, axilla, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is integrated into a lab's workflow. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a primary, swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though this method is cost-efficient in eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal situations. All samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial batch is readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as necessary. Both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation ensure oversight of the process from Accessioning to Confirmation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical consumption data: Exhibits a history of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer; the analysis is actually performed on the hair strand and not on the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
