Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Beauregard, Mississippi. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're specialists in hair testing and provide testing facilities nationwide that perform hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary from the head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

Over the past years, drug screening methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts mandate hair drug testing rather than conventional urine analysis. These tests are preferred by companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal institutions, and individuals on probation. The primary advantage is the prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed sample process, making it hard to falsify results. Yet, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting of alcohol and drug usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance records by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. To ensure accuracy, we suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair is acceptable. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal four steps in processing a lab drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning processes a sample into the lab's system initially. This step includes checking the sample’s sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting additional information not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for illicit substances. Though Screening is a cost-effective approach for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

If a specimen tests as presumptively positive during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. In Extraction, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory sequence is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely hard, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a trend of substance use over an extended duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are usually costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth variations can influence the level of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Although frequently dubbed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
