Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Benton, Mississippi. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol exam, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities available across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head; however, body hair might be applicable in certain cases. Hair analysis is effective for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug examinations. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for a hair test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests benefit employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage lies in its extended detection period—up to 90 days—collected under supervision, making deception practically impossible. Alternatively, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is recognized as a potent method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing markers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for substances like alcohol. Gathering hair is straightforward, challenging to manipulate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section composed of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG add-ons and tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers all other varieties (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample in the lab's system. This process ensures the sample is sealed and sent correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening acts as an initial rapid examination for drug misuse. Though cost-effective for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Any samples indicated as positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid); hence, hair drug tests are the most intricate to perform.

Any confirmed positive result during Screening is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive specimens are washed if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter time frame.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring high result accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: Offers a historical pattern of drug use, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot track very recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to cost more than other drug test methods.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle from beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug detection methods, hair follicle tests in Benton, MS provide a superior option to urine tests. These tests offer greater accuracy over extended periods, which urine tests cannot match. With enhanced reliability in identification, hair tests are less susceptible to manipulation and tampering, ensuring clearer and more definitive substance usage records.

In Benton, MS, hair follicle drug testing allows for the observation of a person’s drug use over an extended timeline, up to 90 days. This feature provides employers with a thorough insight into an individual's substance use history, making it an invaluable tool for comprehensive drug monitoring that surpasses shorter-detection alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
