Situated in Gloster, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Our specialty lies in hair testing, available across all cities nationwide. For accurate testing, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is often required. The tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as per specific requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests adhere to strict zero-tolerance policies and are crucial for probation checks due to their extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, difficult to tamper with, although urine tests still excel for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. This approach captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. When collected from the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over approximately three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length and consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. If testing for EtG, additional analyses, or over ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves these four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the initial entry of the sample into the lab's system occurs. This step includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical option for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally admissible. All presumptively positive samples in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If the Screening phase yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

A positive screening outcome is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation requirements of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced likelihood of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over an extended timeframe, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally carry a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Gloster, MS

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests, hair tests hold a significant advantage in reliability and detection accuracy. Hair tests can detect drug history up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter timeframe. This makes hair testing an invaluable tool for employers and agencies requiring thorough assessments.

The inability to easily tamper with hair tests ensures that the results are more reliable and less susceptible to manipulation, providing a truthful representation of an individual's drug use. This makes hair testing a preferred choice in maintaining thorough and genuine standards of evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
