In Henderson Point, Mississippi, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol screenings, we have facilities nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has notably increased in recent years. This method is now often preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and those on probation find this method effective. A primary advantage of hair testing is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a timeline of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and transportation is convenient.

A sample length of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is preferable. The sample should ideally be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial introduction of a sample into a lab’s system, which includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is an initial, rapid evaluation for commonly abused drugs. While a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screening must be validated to stand in legal settings. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to administer.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation if necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug use back up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to alterations: Tampering with a hair drug test is difficult, thereby ensuring high accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It uncovers drug use patterns over an extended period, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests," this testing evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior to traditional urine tests? In Henderson Point, MS, hair testing offers longer detection windows and greater accuracy. Hair tests surpass urine tests in identifying substance use from the past 90 days, ensuring more comprehensive insights into one's history. This makes hair testing the preferred choice for employers aiming for reliable screening.

Comparing hair and urine testing, the benefits of the former are clear. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, making them more trustworthy for both employers and institutions. Urine tests can be limited in scope and vulnerable to tampering, whereas hair testing provides an incontrovertible assessment of drug use, safeguarding organizational policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Henderson Point, MS, is revered for its extended detection window. Offering up to 90 days of historical data, it provides a comprehensive view of a person's substance use. This long detection period helps employers make informed decisions based on a more complete picture of employee or applicant drug use.

The elongated detection capability of hair testing surpasses that of urine tests. By covering a timeframe of up to three months, hair tests give employers a cross-section of an individual's long-term behavior concerning substance use. This method enhances the understanding of a person's drug history more reliably.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Henderson Point, MS, stands out for its resistance to tampering. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are difficult to adulterate, thereby yielding trustworthy results. The integrity of the testing can signify a true representation of drug use without the risk of sample manipulation.

With the reduced risk of sample tampering, hair follicle tests become an ideal solution for credible drug screening. The design of hair testing processes minimizes the chance of deceitful interference, providing results that stakeholders can trust, upholding compliance and confidence in testing practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
