Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Clarkson Valley, Missouri. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair testing. We operate testing centers in cities across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analyses include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become intrinsic to drug assessment. Many workplaces, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine screens. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and those on probation. The chief advantage is the extended detection range, typically up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, and very resistant to manipulation. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of substance intake by capturing biomarkers in the hair strands as they grow. When collected near the roots, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs lasting up to about three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the roots will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result within a laboratory involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is related to the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This stage includes ensuring that the sample's seal and shipment were correctly managed, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any data entry that wasn't covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening refers to a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While this method is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug use for many samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be considered valid in legal situations. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for the Extraction phase. In this part of the process, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing step before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and with the accreditation according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to deceive: The accuracy of hair drug tests is higher because they are very challenging to cheat.
  • Records usage history: Hair testing can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Even though they are often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Clarkson Valley, MO, offers distinct advantages over urine tests. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair testing provides a comprehensive history, revealing usage up to 90 days back. This extended detection window gives employers a broader understanding of an individual's substance habits, ensuring more informed and reliable decisions.

Employers favor hair follicle testing due to its superb detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair samples are less prone to tampering, and the broader detection window provides thorough insight into an applicant's past drug use, enhancing employer confidence in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Clarkson Valley, MO, offers an extended detection window, viewing drug usage patterns over the past 90 days. This feature offers employers a comprehensive understanding of an individual's historical substance use, often providing insights beyond what is possible with traditional testing methods.

With hair follicle tests, employers can detect drug use over a much longer period than urine tests allow. This extended window provides a historical perspective, which is particularly beneficial in assessing consistent drug use patterns, rather than just identifying recent consumption.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employers in Clarkson Valley, MO, benefit from hair follicle tests' robust tamper-resistant design. This testing method significantly reduces the risks of sample manipulation, offering reliable results. As a result, hair analysis is trusted for its integrity and ability to produce unquestionable findings, essential for rigorous compliance demands.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
