Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Green Park, Missouri. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area, with locations in every city across the country ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized parameters.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become an increasingly popular method for detecting drug use. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their longer detection window, up to 90 days, with observed sample collection minimizing chances of tampering.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When acquired near the scalp, hair can illustrate an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. Its collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the best sample size for analysis and assurance. For extracurricular, supplemental, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It is advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" pertains to scalp hair alone, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal activities in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is introduced into a lab's system. This step encompasses verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial test for substance abuse. As a cost-effective procedure to exclude drug consumption in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be considered acceptable in legal proceedings. All samples categorized as presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If presumptive positivity is detected at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at a concentration substantially lower than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex methodology to implement.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleanse before confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification alongside the ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests hold a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, improving result accuracy.
  • Provides chronological data: Showcases a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to capture recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur a higher cost than other drug testing strategies.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand instead of the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
