Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Guilford, Missouri. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this area, with facilities across cities nationwide ready to conduct the test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method for screening, often replacing standard urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly mandate hair tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit from hair testing as it offers a longer detection period of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that makes it hard to cheat. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly valued for identifying drug and alcohol use, as it chronicles prolonged exposure by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. Sampling near the scalp offers up to a 3-month insight into alcohol and other drug activities. Hair collection is uncomplicated, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) taken at the scalp will yield 100mg, the perfect quantity for analyzing and confirmation. For EtG, added panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If head hair cannot be gathered, a similar volume of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system, which involves making sure the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs. While a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use chances for most, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be accepted legally. All presumptive positives from Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing notoriously challenging.

Any confirmed positive result undergoes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The full procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair toxicology screenings identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with briefer detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: The test is difficult to cheat, ensuring more authentic outcomes.
  • Chronicles drug use history: It reveals drug use trends over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent intake: Approx. 5-7 days are needed for hair to reflect drug presence.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug analyses are pricer than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates may impact metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests" being used, the actual analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
