In Huntleigh, Missouri, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair substance screening, we have centers nationwide where you can undergo a test. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom screening options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Various employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over traditional urine screening. Those adopting hair follicle tests benefit from a detection timeframe of approximately 90 days, with an observed collection process that's hard to alter. However, urine tests remain reliable for detecting recent substance use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying the presence of drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeframe of history for alcohol and various drugs by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When samples are collected near the scalp, hair can reveal detection up to a span of about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered the optimum sample size for screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it solely references scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step involves confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide.

Screening provides an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be validated to stand in court. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening demand additional confirmation.

If a sample hints at positivity during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for the Extraction process. Drugs are then extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the intricacy of hair drug screening as a method.

For confirming any positive Screening outcomes, procedures like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with narrower detection times.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Hair drug test results are highly reliable, given the challenging nature of manipulation.
  • Chronicles drug usage: It details a timeline of drug usage across an interval, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Indetectable recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Fluctuations in outcomes: Elements including hair color and individual growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", this test specifically analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
