Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ionia, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is required, our specialty in hair testing is supported by testing centers Nationwide capable of administering a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer alternative customized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the preferred method for drug screenings. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts demand hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance for drugs, legal entities, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection that is nearly impossible to falsify. However, for drug use within a 5-day window, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol use by locking biomarkers within the hair fiber that is growing. When taken from the scalp area, hair can offer nearly a three-month detection span for substances including alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) when collected nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or when testing surpasses 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar volume of body hair may be used. Head hair exclusively pertains to scalp hair in this context, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The process within the lab for determining a drug test result includes the main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where the sample first enters the laboratory system. It ensures the sample is appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a preliminary analysis for drugs of abuse. This is an economical way to identify drug use in most samples; however, a positive result from this screen requires verification for it to be valid in court. Samples showing presumptive positives at Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Any presumed positive screening result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extraordinarily challenging, thus enhancing the precision of results.
  • Chronological insight: It furnishes a record of drug usage trends over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
