Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Lincoln, Missouri. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers nationwide, including every city that can conduct hair tests. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body, as needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom testing options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer them over standard urine tests. Employers implementing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize hair tests. The main advantage is a longer drug detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision and hard to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as an effective mechanism for spotting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period extending up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drug analysis. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a specimen within a lab’s framework. This encompasses confirming the correct sealing and dispatch of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening serves as an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to potentially dismiss drug presence in the majority of samples, a positive result from screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. Any provisionally positive samples in Screening require further affirmation.

When a sample indicates possible positivity during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples receive a wash preceding confirmation where necessary. The complete lab method from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed within both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and under ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection term: Hair drug analyses can pinpoint drug usage up to 90 days, compared to urine analyses with a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a pattern of drug use across an extended period, surpassing mere recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: A timeframe of roughly 5-7 days is required for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug analyses are pricier compared to other drug testing alternatives.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth rate can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
