Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Marlborough, Missouri. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments, and we have facilities in every city across the country capable of conducting a hair exam. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary; hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug assessments. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts now require a hair drug test rather than the usual urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize hair follicle drug tests, primarily because they offer a prolonged detection span of generally up to 90 days, are performed under direct supervision, and are nearly foolproof. However, for identifying drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. If gathered near the root, hair can reveal substance and alcohol use for as long as about three months. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of hair weighing about 100mg, typically a 1.5-inch length consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from the proximity of the scalp, is deemed optimal for analysis and verification. For evaluations concerning EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is preferable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The drug test lab processing encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning introduces the sample into a lab's workflow. This involves confirming the sample’s proper seal and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry that isn’t handled by an electronic custody process.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening offers an economical method to discard drug presence in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positives necessitate further confirmation.

When a Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. During this phase, substances are derived from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or saliva testing, which makes hair drug screening the most challenging procedure.

The Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before Confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a comparatively limited detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: The integrity of a hair drug test is high, making it challenging to falsify results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers an insight into patterns of use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of substances in hair requires about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more expensive than other testing alternatives.
  • Variances in results: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand rather than the root beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Marlborough, MO, the benefits are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection capabilities, identifying drug use over a longer duration. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent substance use, hair tests provide a broader historical context.

The enhanced precision of hair tests makes them highly valued. Employers needing rigorous drug policies benefit from hair analysis due to its unmatched accuracy. This method ensures reliability in detecting long-term substance use patterns.

Moreover, hair follicle tests' efficiency in identifying substances over months is a significant advantage. While urine tests indicate recent drug use, hair analysis delivers a detailed look at an individual's drug history up to 90 days, integrating detection and certainty.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method stands out for its extended detection period. In Marlborough, MO, this test can trace drug usage up to 90 days, granting employers a thorough view of an individual's substance history.

This extended window is pivotal for firms aiming to enforce drug-free environments. It allows a better understanding of an applicant's past behavior, crucial for informed decisions on employment.

Utilizing hair tests, companies benefit from insights beyond recent consumption, providing a robust basis for assessing long-term drug use, crucial for maintaining workplace standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant approach to drug testing in Marlborough, MO. Their nature significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, ensuring the results' integrity.

This method's reliability stems from its observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to modify samples, unlike other testing formats such as urine tests.

The assurance of unquestionable results is a key advantage, underpinning the credibility of hair testing over other methods. Businesses prefer this method for its transparency and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
