Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Mosby, Missouri. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our centers are available nationwide in every city to conduct these tests. Typically, a person needs 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair. Hair samples can be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent method in drug testing. More employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer this over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and probation-determined individuals favor hair tests. The main advantage is its extended drug detection window, typically covering up to 90 days, ensuring an observed, hard-to-tamper process. However, urine tests remain most reliable for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol use over a roughly 3-month span. It's straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an ideal quantity for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, extra tests, and beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a precision scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the starting point for incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any extra data entry that was not included through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-conscious method to exclude drug usage in most samples, positive findings must be verified for courtroom credibility. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

A presumptive positive sample in the Screening phase leads to more hair being separated from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis a challenging approach to execute.

Any positive findings in Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples may be washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory steps from Accessioning through Confirmation are conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug screenings can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine screenings have a much briefer detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, yielding more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate usage: Substances typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair coloration and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
