Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Oak Hill, Missouri. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers nationwide ready to perform hair tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown of your head or elsewhere on your body, to proceed. Hair tests can be customized to analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, the judicial system, and probation programs. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection window, typically as long as 90 days. It's conducted through an observed collection method, making it almost impossible to tamper with results. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, slightly challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab's system. This phase involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves withdrawing drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Minimal potential for fraud: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: A period of approximately 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the assessment analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
