Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Rock Hill, Missouri. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments and operates testing centers across all U.S. cities capable of performing these tests. Ideally, there should be 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair available. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for other personalized hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for substance screening. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle screenings are utilized by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A significant advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over extended periods, up to 90 days, during a supervised collection, making it almost impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for identifying recent drug use within the last five days, urine testing remains the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When acquired near the scalp, hair can provide up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory drug test process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into the lab's system. This phase includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not already captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lesser concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo a wash prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which are limited to a shorter period.
  • Hard to deceive: It's notably challenging to skew a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Yields usage history: Provides a trend of drug use over several months instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be identified in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
