Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Saginaw, Missouri. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your hair testing expert, with facilities available across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair tests are versatile, detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or any other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methods. This approach is being adopted by more employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation programs are choosing hair tests for their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and strong resistance to manipulation. Yet, for drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow, hair offers an extended timeline of substance use. Gathering hair near the scalp can reveal drug or alcohol use for a period reaching nearly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It’s suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, this refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's database. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and transportation, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid analysis for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result needs verification for legal admissibility. Samples tentatively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the initial sample is used and prepared for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most complex technique to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Low potential to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Reflects past usage: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the evaluation actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
