Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing caters to needs in Saint Johns, Missouri. Specializing in hair testing, our services are accessible with centers across all U.S. cities, ready for conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body suffices for analysis, determining drug, alcohol/ETG presence or accommodating tailored hair testing options.

Over recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over regular urine tests. Unlike standard tests, these tests offer a superior detection window of up to 90 days, undergo an observed collection process, and are virtually tamper-proof. Despite this, testing drugs used in the last 5 days still sees urine tests as the go-to for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption is increasingly recognized. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol biomarkers by embedding them within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month history of drug and alcohol exposure. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily sent.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, perfect for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a laboratory drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening necessitates further validation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumed positive results in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For samples suspected positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the sample and readied for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug testing the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use over a span of up to 90 days, in contrast to shorter timeframes seen with urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent usage: Detectability in hair takes around 5-7 days post-exposure.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Varied factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Saint Johns, MO

While urine testing has long been a standard, hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can trace drug use over a 90-day period, surpassing the limited window of traditional urine tests. This extended timeframe delivers a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug history, making hair tests a superior option.

In workplaces with zero-tolerance policies, using hair follicle tests ensures a more secure environment. The high detection accuracy of hair tests uncovers drug use patterns that would be missed by urine tests, allowing employers to enforce their policies effectively without the risk of manipulation or recent abstinence interference.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Saint Johns, MO

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, identifying substance use up to 90 days. This provides employers a more detailed history of an individual’s drug use, assisting in making informed decisions based on well-rounded information. It's invaluable for those adhering to drug-free policies and seeking long-term substance use assessments.

The prolonged detection period gives a broader understanding of substance habits, circumventing the shortfalls of other testing methods. A 90-day window equips employers with insights into patterns that might affect workplace dynamics, ensuring compliance and fostering a safer, drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Saint Johns, MO

Hair follicle tests significantly reduce the risk of adulteration, being virtually tamper-proof. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, the collection process for hair tests is observed, and results are almost impossible to alter. This integrity ensures that employers receive dependable outcomes, safeguarding the workplace from substance misuse.

For Saint Johns employers, tamper resistance adds an extra layer of security. By choosing hair tests, they benefit from a method that ensures the results' authenticity, enhancing trust in employee assessments and supporting a drug-free work environment without doubts over test integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
