Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services in Savannah, Missouri. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing, with facilities available in all cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for analysis. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

The practice of drug testing has evolved in recent years to include hair follicle drug tests more often. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is a choice for employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probationary settings. These tests provide a longer detection window—up to 90 days—and are collected under supervision, making them virtually tamper-proof. Despite this, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to nearly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. The term 'head hair' specifically denotes scalp hair. 'Body hair' covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s records. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not available in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For those in Savannah, MO, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests are reaffirmed by its extended detection period and superior accuracy. While urine tests are limited to a short timeframe, hair tests provide a comprehensive overview of drug use up to 90 days back, offering unmatched effectiveness in maintaining workplace safety.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window in Savannah, MO, often up to 90 days. This longer timeframe allows employers to gain a fuller picture of an individual's drug use history, making it easier to identify patterns of behavior that might otherwise go unnoticed with shorter-duration tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
