Acclaimed Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Sunset Hills, Missouri. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing, with centers across the nation for such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, the trend for drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts prefer hair-based tests over traditional urine exams. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation commonly use these tests due to the extended detection span of up to 90 days, the secure observation during sample collection, and the difficulty in cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying substances used in the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the proximity of the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the perfect sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's beneficial to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab system. This step confirms the sample's seal and correct shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick test for drugs. This cost-effective method serves to negate drug use in many samples; however, a positive result must be confirmed to stand up in court. Any samples showing tentative positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When a sample indicates tentative positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair, which occurs at a much lower concentration than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a challenging procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples with a tentative positive result undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 regulations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have narrower detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite rare, thus enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: This method can track drug use trends over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test in fact examines hair strands and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
