Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug exams in Winchester, Missouri. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, offering facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can assess drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair sampling options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for screening substance use. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists prefer hair tests over the conventional urine method. Hair follicle tests assist in enforcing zero-tolerance policies by employers, judicial orders, and probation monitoring. A key advantage includes a longer detection span of up to 90 days, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detected within 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers along the hair strand, providing a long-term record of substance use. When obtained close to the scalp, hair samples offer a drug and alcohol detection window of up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

To obtain the ideal sample for screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is needed, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, or assays exceeding ten panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair is solely about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination of samples for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive Screening result must be confirmed for it to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any sample with a potentially positive result during Screening requires further confirmation.

Should a sample show a potential positive during Screening, more of the specimen is extracted for further analysis. This Extraction phase involves obtaining drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples presumed positive are washed, as necessary. Every stage, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect for shorter periods.
  • Reduced risk of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Captures usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
